COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in southern Idaho are preparing for higher demand as federal SNAP benefits will stop on Nov. 1 due to the government shutdown. Mustard Seed Community Center in Twin Falls and other agencies are urging food donations—over 130,000 Idahoans have relied on SNAP, which averages $177 monthly.  KMVT
  • The Kimberly School District’s special education department and the Kimberly/Hansen Police Department held a fundraiser called Bagging for Bucks at Ridley’s Family Market on Monday to support Special Olympics Idaho—donations averaged over $1,500 per event and will cover athlete needs like uniforms, travel equipment, and health screenings. More fundraisers are planned in the Magic Valley for November 20 at Texas Roadhouse and in Jerome in December.  KMVT

  • Gas prices in Twin Falls dropped three cents to $3.40 a gallon this week—AAA said. Prices in Coeur d’Alene and Twin Falls reached a high of $3.47 while Lewiston stayed low at $3.24, and experts expect steadier trends before Thanksgiving—drivers may see calmer rates soon.  KMVT

  • A Twin Falls cat living in a storage shed is eating more and getting fatter as winter nears, which its caretaker says may mean a long, cold season ahead. The caretaker built small insulated shelters with totes and foam for strays—urging locals to care for their pets during the chill.  KEZJ
  • Milk jugs in Idaho have a small code printed near the sell-by date that shows where the milk comes from—if the code starts with 16, the milk was produced locally. Consumers can use the code to check the dairy source and compare prices with the same milk in branded containers.  KEZJ
  • The code printed next to the sell-by date on milk jugs tells shoppers if the milk is local—Idaho milk starts with the code 16 and extra digits identify the dairy.
