EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of Southern Idaho fire science program trains students with real-life fire safety tasks and hands-on experience from local departments. Classes run for two and a half semesters, and applications close at the end of May for those ready to start a career in fire prevention and rescue.  KMVT
  • Canyon Ridge High School named Noah Williams (a top performer) Scholar of the Week for his strong academic performance; the school recognized his dedication in class.  Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Republic Services will launch a commingled recycling program on June 1 in Kimberly if 100 residents sign up—residents can recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, tin, and aluminum as materials are sent to Jerome and then processed in Boise.  KMVT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho State Tax Commission announced that free online services help Idahoans e-file both federal and state income taxes, including for seniors, using links on its website. The offer applies to those with an adjusted gross income ($89,000 or less) and returns are due by April 15.  KMVT
  • Tuesday morning, Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 652, making hunting the official state sport after 9-year-old Betty Grandy from Twin Falls successfully advocated her idea before state lawmakers. The law will take effect on July 1.  KMVT
  • Airmen from the 124th Fighter Wing deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Epic Fury in late March + early April, serving under the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.  KMVT

HEALTH NEWS

  • After governor approval, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced it will start reimbursing providers for full Medicaid mental health services today, restoring care programs to boost access for local residents.  Times-News
